N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is the stable, acetylated form and precursor to the amino acid cysteine and glutathione.

N-acetylcysteine enhances intracellular biosynthesis of glutathione and has been shown to restore low glutathione levels. Glutathione is the most abundant and ubiquitous antioxidant and is responsible for maintaining the oxidative balance within cells.
